Poor Weather Plan

Here's what we do when the weather doesn't cooperate...

We do NOT cancel tours due to poor weather; all tours will go ahead regardless of the weather. However, if the weather is not conducive to stargazing outdoors, we will provide an engaging indoor planetarium experience where we simulate the night sky inside our inflatable dome planetarium. This is a unique guided interpretive planetarium experience NOT available to the public at the Waterton Planetarium. It will be a live, real-time, guided interpretive experience led by our guides, making use of the planetarium’s ability to replicate the night sky as we would see it on that particular night, if the skies were clear.

Please refer to the chart below, to see what is included in the indoor planetarium experience (based on which tour you had originally signed up for). Below the chart is a brief description of each included tour component.

Each planetarium experience will be a comparable length to the duration of the original outdoor tour.

A 20% discount will be applied to your reservation at the start of the indoor planetarium experience.

Bus Transportation pick-up / drop-off: We will pick you up with the Dark Sky Tour Bus, as originally planned, and transport you to the Waterton Planetarium. We will also shuttle you back to your accommodation at the end of the experience.

Townsite Dark Sky Park Tour: Learn about Waterton's status as the world's first transnational International Dark Sky Park.

Planetarium Film on Light Pollution: Enjoy the FullDome film "Dark Side of Light" to learn about the history of light pollution; light pollution's impact on plants, animals, and humans; the serious consequences for the evironment and the economy; and what each of us can do about it.

Planetarium Constellation Tour Part 1: Learn to identify some of the more noteworthy constellations and night sky objects visible with the naked eye, as they would be seen on that particular night.

Planetarium Constellation Tour Part 2: Learn to star-hop around the night sky and identify many significant constellations with the naked eye, while keeping an eye out for meteors (shooting stars) and the Aurora Borealis!

Planetarium Deep Sky Objects Tour: Enhance your knowledge and identify even more constellations, while also observing pre-recorded images of deep-sky objects like star clusters, nebulae, and distant galaxies, which would have been visible through the telescope.

Planetarium Film on Planets: Enjoy a FullDome film that takes you on a tour of the solar system to uncover details about all of our celestial neighbors, starting with the Sun and ended up in the Kuiper Belt - the home of the dwarf planet Pluto.

If you would rather try to reschedule to a subsequent night with clear skies, instead of taking part in the indoor planetarium experience, it is your responsibility to use the self-serve feature in your confirmation email, or contact us, in advance of the 48-hour cut-off limit (as described in our cancellation policy) and request to reschedule (subject to availability). Upon hearing from you, we will do our best to reschedule you to a subsequent night's tour.
