Into the Night: Bats Up Close!

Exhibit with Susan Holroyd | Wildlife Conservation Society

Step into the nocturnal world of bats through this fascinating exhibit from wildlife biologist Susan Holroyd. Explore real bat specimens, 3D printed bat skulls and wings, and listen to the eerie echolocation calls of these mysterious night flyers. Susan brings engaging, hands-on elements to this interactive space—complete with a bat house model, educational displays, and the chance to test your own “bat research” skills.
Craft a flappy bat, rescue rubber bats from a mock research net, weigh them, measure their wingspan, and record your findings like a real field biologist.

BIO : Susan Holroyd


Susan Holroyd has worked as a bat researcher in western Canada for more than 25 years. She is a passionate bat conservation advocate with the Alberta Community Bat Program, where she leads public outreach, education, and citizen science initiatives across the province. Drawing on years of experience conducting bat research and creating best management practices for conserving bats and their habitats, she works to raise awareness about Alberta’s 9 bat species, their ecological importance, and the threats they face. Susan’s engaging presentations and hands-on activities inspire people of all ages to appreciate and help protect these fascinating nocturnal mammals. #BatsNeedFriends!
